The N64 didn’t have many games, but people loved it still. I have so much nostalgia for it and have been playing a ton of games from it lately. I have stumbled upon a lot of current games that are heavily inspired by the console. I wanted to let the world know to check these out!
Macbat 64
This game is related to Super Kiwi 64. The main character from that game is even in Macbat 64 as an NPC. You play as a bat character who is going through different levels and doing different things to complete them. The game will have you collecting items for characters, and solving simple puzzles, and there is even a cart racing level. If you want more Super Kiwi 64, this is a great option.
Cavern of Dreams
Cavern of Dreams takes the idea of Spyro and combines it with an N64 collect-athon. You play as a dragon who is traversing different levels collecting eggs that contain dragons. The more eggs you get, the more skills you learn which makes the game open up even more. This game is great fun and a really good current-day take on the genre.
Lunastice
This game is perhaps more PS1/Saturn-looking, but I think it is really great and still wanted to include it in my list. Lunastice is a beautiful game and it is one that improves as you play it. The levels are varied and the platforming is tight and fun. There is so much to explore and find, this one is a short runtime, but will keep you thoroughly interested. There aren’t even any boss fights to worry about.
Yooka-Laylee
Yooka-Laylee is a love letter to the Banjo Kazooie games. It is so heavily inspired by them that it is hard to not see it upon starting it. The characters, the voices, the dialogue, the learning of new skills. It is still a pretty fun game that is soon getting a remake. If you like Banjo and want more, this is a great option. The sequel to this game is even better, but more of a 2D platformer instead.
Dadish 3D
I love the Dadish games. When I saw they released a new 3D game, I had to get it. The plot of the games is simple. You are a dad radish and you have to traverse different levels to save your children. Dadish 3D is full of challenges, great platforming, and so much humor. Be sure to check out the previous 2D games as well!
