Earlier today, Anbernic released a new update for the RG Vita Pro, bumping the software version up to v1.1.4. The update aims to provide system optimizations, “fix bugs,” and, more importantly, add Google Play support.

Out of the box, the RG Vita Pro was surprisingly missing the Google Play Store, something that I’m not even sure many people noticed. That’s simply because on the same day that the RG Vita and RG Vita Pro were released, a new GammaOS Next build was available. Many, myself included, scrambled to get GammaOS Next installed on the RG Vita Pro, leaving Anbernic’s stock build in the dust.

We’re not entirely sure why Anbernic’s build of Android didn’t include Google Play Services to begin with. However, those of you who have stuck with it in lieu of trying a different custom firmware don’t have to solely rely on third-party app stores and/or Obtainium to get your apps and app updates.

Speaking of which, Anbernic is rolling out v1.14 for the RG Vita Pro via an OTA update, so there’s no need to worry about manually flashing or sideloading the update. Instead, just open the FOTA Update app, tap the “Download” button, wait for the update to be downloaded, then tap the button again to install it. From there, your RG Vita Pro will automatically reboot, and once that’s complete, you’ll find the Play Store icon right on the home screen.

This is just the latest “major” software update to arrive for Anbernic’s Android handhelds. Recently, a day-one update was pushed for the RG Rotate, which improved the oversharpening issues that some found, and before that, the RG477V was updated with an all-new launcher, complete with a new “Control Center.” Oh, and I almost forgot that we just got an official Linux build for the RG DS, straight from Anbernic.

Given the current state of the market, with RAM and storage prices still wreaking havoc, it’s refreshing to see Anbernic put more of a focus on the software. Hopefully, this is a trend that continues, even as Anbernic churns out more handhelds.
