There is no shortage of devices with mindbending designs, and Game Console is adding to that list with their new MyMini handheld.

We’ve covered a plentitude of devices over the past few years showing some truly odd design choices. Companies, however, should embrace risks in retro handhelds to minimize a constant flow of saturation due to the same consoles being released over and over again.

Make it Different

Recently, Stubbs reviewed the BatleXP G350, an R36S clone that manages to take the base design, idea, and internals, and mesh them with better buttons, viewing angles, and better, sloped triggers. That small difference sets the device apart from the many R36S clones that continue to be released even today.

Given the lack of audacious changes found in most clone handhelds, it’s somewhat exciting to see a company throw something together solely because it might be interesting.

MyMini Looks Familiar

The Game Console MyMini looks like a Miyoo Mini Plus but it adds an analog stick smack-dab in the middle of the device. Why? Solely because they can, I’d guess.

Game Console MyMini Specs

  • Display: 3.5-inch IPS
  • Resolution: 640 x 480
  • Storage: 8GB internal, MicroSD card slot
  • RAM: 1GB
  • Connectivity: WiFi
  • Battery: 4000mAh
  • Operating System: Linux-based (EmuELEC v4.7)
  • Features: LED analog stick, USB-C charging, headphone jack,

Realistically, on an RK3326, the only console the analog stick would be useful for would be N64, but even then, performance would not be anywhere near 100%. That could explain the thought process behind the design, though. Factoring in that the original N64 controller also brandished its joystick front and center, it makes some sense.

Game Console is Synonymous with Unique

Game Console is notorious for its oftentimes unique designs. The R36MAX features a pitch-like design complete with a soccer ball and all. At the same time, the R33S is a clone of the Miyoo Mini Plus, but with the same RK3326 processor found in the MyMini.

Game Console, the most directly named manufacturer in all of retro handhelds, is proving once again that they’re willing to do the outrageous and wacky, but with some semblance of identity. It may not be perfectly suited for those looking to play games that natively have joystick support, but it may be an easy buy for those who look to stretch their thumb to control retro games.

The MyMini is only one of a few brazenly adventurous devices we’ve seen. That being said, as the retro handheld niche continues to grow, more devices with bizarre additions will more than likely start to pop up. As far as this one goes, I’m all for it.
