This might just be the wildest week for handhelds that we’ve seen since before the RAMpocalypse took hold of the hobby. Retroid is launching the Pocket Nova tonight, AYANEO has already sold out of the Pocket Micro 2, and now Anbernic is back to remind us that the RG 55G1 is still on the way.
The company released its first “hands-on” video for the Anbernic RG 55G1, showing off what the handheld actually looks like, as opposed to relying on renders. In the minute-long video, we can see the RG 55G1 being used to play a couple of games, albeit the video cuts away rather quickly.
From there, we are shown close-ups of the RG 55G1 in all three color options that will be available. This is definitely a deviation from some of the older Anbernic showcase videos that we’re accustomed to seeing. Maybe Anbernic is trying to get a bit more stylish with its videos, while still making sure to show off certain aspects.
There’s not much else to really discern from the video other than that it’s really just a vessle to try and build up the hype. Unfortunately, the company has yet to reveal the full spec sheet, pricing, or when it will even be released. However, given the video’s release timing, it’s probably a safe bet that we’ll learn more details next week.
Although unconfirmed, the RG 55G1 made an unexpected appearance on Geekbench earlier this week. The Geekbench 6 results revealed that the handheld is running on Android 14, and uses the “QTI SM4450” processor, along with “3.40GB” of RAM.
A quick Google search tells us that the QTI SM4450 is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2, a chip that was first announced in 2023. Nevertheless, provided the Geekbench results are actually from the RG 55G1, it would mark the first Anbernic handheld to make use of a Qualcomm processor.
Given that the RP Nova and Pocket Micro 2 were also recently introduced, are you still interested in the Anbernic RG 55G1? Sound off and let us know in the comments below.
