Retroid has been releasing new details on the upcoming Retroid Pocket Nova at a surprisingly breakneck speed this week, culminating in a price reveal and additional details this morning. Since so much has come out about the device since our initial reporting earlier in the week, we’ve compiled all the information we know so far into this article.

As many suspected, the Retroid Pocket Nova will be powered by what is essentially the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (the QCS8550 is the Dragonwing model, which is the same as a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 but with the 5G cellular modem components removed). The Pocket Nova will thankfully come with a minimum of 8GB of RAM as well, with a 12GB configuration also available for a slightly higher price. Of course, the killer feature here is that 4.5-inch, 120Hz, 4:3 1280×960 AMOLED screen.

Retroid Pocket Nova Gameplay Showcase

It’s become increasingly obvious that Retroid has had the Pocket Nova in the works for quite some time. To help build even more hype ahead of the launch, the company dropped a Games Demo showcase video on its YouTube channel.

The video shows off a few different retro games, including some with shaders applied. However, it also gave us a look at what the experience will be like when using the Retroid Dual Screen attached to the Pocket Nova.

Retroid Pocket Nova Pricing and Colors

The Retroid Pocket Nova has three pricing tiers that will be available on launch:

  • $229 – 8GB/128GB models (Black, GameCube, and 16-Bit colors only)
  • $269 – 12GB/128GB models (Black, GameCube, and 16-Bit colors only)
  • $274 – 12GB/128GB models (Ice Blue, Crystal, Watermelon, and Clear Purple)

Based on the information released, it looks like the clear colors will only be available in the 12GB/128GB configuration, and for an extra $5 over the more standard colors. While I know several members of the community were hoping that the price of the device might come in a bit cheaper ($200 Lite version with SD 865, anyone?), the pricing seems surprisingly palatable given the specs and current market conditions.

The subtext in the graphic also mentions a “free bumped back shell” as a pre-order bonus, which, when looking at the additional graphic they provided below, seems to indicate that the Retroid Pocket Nova will come with a flat back configuration as a default, but will ship with a contoured back shell that users can swap if they want a more ergonomic device. It’s great to see that Retroid is giving options to users to customize the device to their liking.

The device is already listed on their website with a “SOLD OUT” notice, with some additional information and graphics on device specs and colors, so it looks like they’re prepped and ready for launch.

What’s Next?

Given the current downswing in the retro handheld market, with the insane prices of memory and storage components due to AI, Retroid has managed to stir up a lot of excitement and interest with the Retroid Pocket Nova. Here’s to hoping that they can have a successful launch and that retro handheld enthusiasts are able to get the device in their hands quickly!

  1. Hopefully this brings the price down of the RG477M by a lot. I just want to play up to PS2. A SD8 GEN 2 is more for those wanting Switch emulation. I’ve got an Odin 3 for that. I also want the larger screen from the RG477M.

  2. Seriously, can articles like this give me some idea of what the thing can actually do? Just giving me the name of the processor tell me absolutely nothing, at least give me a rough suggestion of what type of games I could expect to play if I dropped this kind of money
