If you haven’t been keeping up on frontends recently, there’s been a slew of frontends that have had either a focus on aesthetics, simplicity, or a combination of the two. Whether that’s been fully featured frontends like iisu or Cocoon. Or it’s been focused frontends like Wave and Cannoli, there’s been something for everyone. But Socket, is starting to feel like a solid combination of the two. While this frontend has been cooking in the background, we’ve seen a few solid updates since release, and this is another one. Now with a few extra features too.
As always, I like to give the recommendation to check out a software developers normal means of communication for more information. And in the case of Socket it’s a rule of three again. Check out their Patreon to support them and receive early access to Socket releases. Their website for links, and information about their other project Tile Tactics, or their Discord for announcements and a group of people to talk about Socket even more. As for the list of updates in 0.6.0 you can catch them down below.
Additions
- Android apps are now available in the 3D carousel.
- Zoom slider in Edit Platform, to adjust the displayed 3D model’s zoom.
Fixes
- Image picker sometimes failed to update the cartridge’s label.
- Fixed PlayStation button layout
- Retroarch crashes/closes when putting the device to sleep.
- Patreon supporters’ listed support duration was sometimes undercounted on the Thanks screen, and supporters are now sorted by longest-supporting first.
- Various QoL fixes
This may not be the largest update that’s been showcased through Retro Handhelds, but it’s awesome to see continued updates regardless. Developing a frontend is never an easy task, and with a community that has as many options as it does right now, seeing this type of care into the project is always a nice thing to see. I personally can’t wait to see more, as the aesthetic of Socket is seriously good.
