FunnyPlaying’s FPGB MINI Might Be Closer to Launch Than We Thought

Earlier this month, we learned that FunnyPlaying was working on a “Mini Game Boy,” complete with a dedicated cartridge slot for Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges. A few days ago, the company quietly published a blog post doubling as a User Manual for the FPGB MINI.

The manual reveals everything from what you’ll get in the box to the spec sheet, button layout, and pretty much everything we need to know. Below, you’ll find the entire spec sheet that was provided by the manual, but you can head over and check it out yourself at the link here.

This comes on the heels of the GAMEMT MTX randomly appearing yesterday on the official GAMEMT website, AliExpress, and more recently Royibeila. The MTX is another handheld with a dedicated cartridge slot, but is designed with the Game Boy Advance in mind, as opposed to the Game Boy and Game Boy Color.

That being said, it’s interesting to see either the MTX or the FPGB MINI hitting the market, but perhaps this is just a budding niche within the niche of retro handhelds. Analogue and ModRetro have its respective cartridge-based handhelds, and let’s not forget the FPGBC, which is actually still available from the FunnyPlaying website.

The FPGB MINI won’t even be the first “mini” Game Boy, as the “TadBoy Color” from Froggo Customs has been around for a few years. It too plays Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges, but the Tad Boy Color is more of a “DIY” kit that costs quite a bit more than the MTX. On that note, given the history of FunnyPlaying’s various handhelds, we suspect the FPGB MINI won’t cost nearly as much, and now it’s just a waiting game until we can actually pick one up.
