In case you haven’t been in the know, FunnyPlaying are more than just a Game Boy screens, and shells company. They’re a parts and upgrades service first, but a handheld maker second. For those who know their handheld history, FunnyPlaying originally released a handheld all the way back in 2023 called the Retro Pixel Pocket. This Android 7.1 based handheld was running an Allwinner A64, and while it was solid for the time, its issues in the buttons led to it being discontinued.
After that, they game back with an FPGA console kit for Game Boy and Game Boy Color in the form of the FPGBC, and in 2025 re-released the Retro Pixel Pocket as a Linux device this time around with the venerable RK3326. But now here we are, and it seems that FunnyPlaying is taking another stab at the Game Boy handheld market with a new Mini DMG
Originally reported by Retro Dodo as an exclusive, they share that the “Retro Pixel MiniGB” is not only reminiscent of a small Game Boy DMG, but is also capable of playing the same cartridges as well. While everything seems to be scaled down from the face buttons to the d-pad, it sounds like the screen size is going to hopefully remain around a similar size at 2.6″. If this is using a similar FPGA to their older FPGBC, this will be a solid device for both Game Boy and Game Boy Color roms.
Alongside the general size and screen of the Retro Pixel MiniGB, FunnyPlaying also showed off their own slate of software powering this, which allows you to play any ROMs that you’ve legally obtaained over the years. The software shows that the screen does look pretty nice and bright, and will be a big improvement over original hardware, though recent handhelds definitely will have this beat, even at smaller sizes.
At this point the only things I want to know are pretty basic. How much? When can I get it? And what’s that screen resolution? I’m absolutely excited to try one once they release, but until we get more information, we’ll just have to wait and see.
