The Neo Geo AES+ is real, it’s official, and pre-orders are open now. SNK and Plaion Replai, the outfit behind the Atari 2600+ and Atari 7800+, have announced the Neo Geo AES+: a brand new version of SNK’s legendary home console powered by re-engineered ASIC chips, with no emulation involved.

That last part is the headline. Gameplay on the Neo Geo AES+ is not achieved through emulation. Instead, the console is powered by legacy ASIC chips re-engineered by modern standards to accurately replicate the original machine’s hardware and software. The system natively plays both new and original AES cartridges, which puts it in a different category entirely from FPGA solutions or software-based approaches to Neo Geo compatibility.

Quality-of-life upgrades include low-latency HDMI output, 1080p output, and on-screen BIOS and DIP switches located on the bottom of the console, allowing for instant switching of language selection, overclocking the hardware, or choosing different display modes. The console also offers low power consumption and permanently saves high score data for each game. Original AV output is retained alongside the HDMI, meaning CRT users aren’t left out, and stereo sound is on board, unlike the original.

Console prices start at $250 for a standard black version with a wired controller. A white Anniversary Edition, which also comes with a wireless arcade stick, a memory card, and Metal Slug, goes for $350. A black Ultimate Edition is priced at $1,000 and includes everything in the Anniversary Edition, plus ten games total and a game rack. Re-released AES cartridges are being sold separately at $90 each, with ten titles available at launch.

Now, while the re-engineered ASIC claim is promising on paper, without hands-on verification of timing accuracy and audio fidelity against original hardware, it remains a claim to be tested rather than taken at face value. The Neo Geo AES+ launches on November 12, 2026, with pre-orders open now.
