It’s no secret that Anbernic has been off to an awkward start in 2026. The release of both the RG Vita series and the G01 controller has put off mixed sentiment from the community, and it shows. But now Anbernic is trying to follow the path of other companies (namely GameMT), and it’s trying to be weird. The RG Rotate, thanks to its initial reveal trailer this morning, is shaping up to be one of the more interesting releases from Anbernic since the RG Slide of 2025.

Not much is known about the RG Rotate at the moment. The CPU, Battery, and even the screen resolution remain a mystery to us, but what has been shown has at least intrigued my mind. From the aluminum and ABS body and swiveling hinge, to the adjustable height shoulder buttons and square screen. Coming in both “Aurora Silver” and “Polar Black”, Anbernic is pitching this as a multifunctional device for gaming, listening to music, and…a clock?

From previous renders and videos showing what the emulation front end looks like, current speculation for the RG Rotate is coming down to something running Android, and with the lack of any sticks, there’s the potential it may not be the strongest chip in there either. Comments on Anbernic’s YouTube video are already noting shortcomings, including the lack of a headphone jack on a “music player” handheld. But considering the genuine interest some are showing towards the RG Rotate, that may not stop the hype train from coming for this one.

With everything considered thus far, I’m actually pretty intrigued by the RG Rotate, as Anbernic trying something new is always a good thing. And as someone getting into dedicated audio players more, this could have the potential of being a good alternative for some. The only thing I hope is that this doesn’t have the same pitfalls that the RG Slide did. A new hinge design raises the price a bit too high for the specs provided.

Will it be good? Will it be bad? Only time will tell, and for once, I might have a bit of hope for this one, too.
