Pocket Vert CPU

The CPU is a bit of a surprise here, as that places the newer Pocket Vert with a weaker CPU than the older Pocket DMG (which is rocking a Snapdragon G3X Gen 2). Maybe AYANEO is really trying to market this as a premium Game Boy and Game Boy Color device for gaming enthusiasts, reducing some costs with an earlier CPU rather than go for an all-encompassing vertical handheld.

Colors and Pricing

As is par for the course for AYANEO, we’ve got a set of color options for the Pocket Vert, with the most elaborate color locked behind the highest SKU. AYANEO has done this in nearly every Indiegogo campaign they’ve conducted for any of their devices and, depending on who you ask, it’s kind of irritating.

Looking at the SKU configurations, we’ve got the following options:

  • 8GB + 128GB – $269 EB pricing – Black and White
  • 12GB + 256GB – $349 EB pricing – Black and White
  • 12GB + 256GB – $369 EB pricing – Lava Red

The limited configuration options further supports my theory that, instead of marketing this as an all-capable vertical handheld like the Pocket DMG, AYANEO are likely instead marketing this as a minimalist, “premium” Game Boy and Game Boy color machine. Sure, it has the capabilities to do more than that, but removing the sticks in favor of a touchpad doesn’t really lend itself to more than just D-Pad and ABXY gaming.

Accessories

Also mentioned were a slew of accessories available for the Pocket Vert. Pretty standard fare here, as we’ve got a screen protector, stand, and leather carrying case. If the leather carrying case is anything like the one they offered with the Pocket DMG, that case absolutely rules and should be scooped up.

What Next?

With the IndieGoGo landing page live, it appears that the Pocket Vert is moving ever closer to launching. While no concrete dates were given for the Pocket Vert launch, since we’re already this far into December, we can pretty safely determine this one won’t launch until January.

As someone who already has an AYANEO Pocket DMG (which is my favorite vertical handheld to date), I don’t have a ton of interest in the Pocket Vert. However, for those looking for a more minimalistic design, ala the Analogue Pocket, this one might be right up your alley.
