Retroid has shown off a new Classic 6 variant of the Retroid Pocket Classic, but this time bearing the same colorway as the Sega Genesis.

The Sega Genesis is one of the most influential consoles ever released. Not to be all too dramatic, but the console and its marketing may be the single most impactful one-two punch gaming has ever seen.

Sega vs. Nintendo

Nintendo was sitting comfortably on its throne after the release of the original NES. When the SNES launched, it truly pushed the envelope of what Nintendo was capable of and went to extreme measures to showcase the company’s prowess in video game development. The Sega Genesis entered the scene with the same 16-bit backing, but with it came the powerful “Sega does what Nintendon’t” campaign that still plagues Nintendo today.

Sega Genesis Controller and Genesis packaging

Of course, over the years, Nintendo would be the one to last, but the association of “kid games” with not enough edge is still a critique heard from all different corners of the video game world. While it may not explicitly be true, those who believe it can source their admonishments back to that one single Sega marketing campaign.

A New Classic

Now, Retroid is introducing a potential Genesis-themed Classic 6 to the fray.

When the Classic 6 model was shown off, it distinctly differed from the other colorways by not featuring four buttons, but instead housing six, like certain Genesis and Saturn controllers had. However, the only color available was one inspired by the odd assortment of colors found on the original Saturn controller.

With a more monotone black and grey theme dressing up the Classic 6, it may be the one to get for those who idolize solid, dark, black hardware. Before this, the darkest color option available for the Retroid Pocket Classic was the Atomic Purple, a color inspired by the Game Boy Color color of the same name.

Still, Retroid is asking for a measly 350 likes to make the product. But with a mockup already created and shared on official channels, the tweet sitting at 311 likes at the time of writing, and a desire to answer calls that the community makes, Retroid is more than likely already sitting on a few of these, and the only barrier to cross is making the sale page live.
