Happy Halloween! Maybe you’re passing out candy, going trick or treating, or even attending a Halloween party. When you’re settle my down tonight, you might get a chance to pick up your handheld and play some games.
I compiled 5 games for you that, in my opinion, are played best on a handheld. My favorite kinds of games to find at translations, games that didn’t get released, and homebrew games. Here are five of those for you to check out!Â
40 Winks (N64, GBC, PS1)

40 Winks is an unreleased 3D platformer from the era where the genre was king. You play as siblings Ruff and Tumble and explore various spooky levels. The game is your standard collect-athon, but possibly one you haven’t experienced before. Recently, the Game Boy Color version got released as well!
Sweet Home (NES)

I am sure I’ve mentioned this game before, but it’s my favorite retro horror game to recommend. Made by Capcom, Sweet Home is based on a Japanese horror movie. This game actually inspired the Resident Evil franchise.
You control a group of 5 documentary creators and each character has unique skills to help with some light puzzle-solving. Another unique part is that the combat is turn-based RPG. It never released in English, but there is a complete patch you can enjoy it with now.
Linda Cube (PS1)

This is a strange one. The plot has a meteor hitting your planet and you are tasked with loading your Ark with different kinds of animals. Sound familiar? The twist is this is an RPG, it’s not on Earth, and everyone on the planet is a bit insane. Maybe not too much of a horror game, but it can be unsettling.
Dracula: Dark Reign (GBC)

A homebrew game for the Game Boy Color that is also the first ever Stoker family approved game? Maybe you finished the new Castlevania or even the original for GotM this month and want more of that classic action?
This game is inspired both by the original Bram Stoker story and the gameplay of classic Castlevania. The visuals are gorgeous and you can even get a physical collection from Incube8.
Clock Tower (WonderSwan)

I know the classic point and click Clock Tower game isn’t too unknown, but how about the English translated WonderSwan version? Something about playing this game in black and white almost makes it more fitting and scary? It always great to experience a classic game on a different handheld, especially one like the WonderSwan that doesn’t have too many options.
So what are you playing this Halloween? Are there some more lesser-known games we missed? Let us know in the comments!
