ROM hacks are having another monster year, and the next big one is almost here. Pokémon Epsilon Emerald, a complete demake of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire rebuilt on the Game Boy Advance original, releases November 14. And in a scene currently arguing about machine-generated content, developer pokemerrp is planting a flag: Epsilon Emerald is billed as an entirely human effort, with no AI in the code, the art, or anywhere else.

The feature list reads like a wishlist compiled by everyone who has ever loved Hoenn: a fully playable Delta Episode, soaring on Latias and Latios with Mirage Spots included, following Pokémon, the DexNav, and Super-Secret Bases you can share with friends via mGBA savestates. Cosplay Pikachu is here. Milotic gets a custom Mega Evolution. There’s an intern in Professor Birch’s lab who will happily sign you up for the built-in Nuzlocke mode.

Difficulty comes in three flavors, from a relaxed Easy to a Hard mode that bans bag items in battle entirely, with soft level caps keeping your starter from trivializing the early game. All 386 Gen 1-3 ‘Mons are accounted for, along with their regional forms, evolutions, and Mega Evolutions, plus Riolu, Lucario, and one secret addition.

The detail that really got me: save compatibility runs both ways with vanilla Emerald, and Epsilon keeps the GameCube-era connectivity. You can link up with Pokémon Colosseum, XD, or even Pokémon Channel and receive a Jirachi, the way Arceus intended.

Post-launch support is planned well into 2027, with a roadmap covering Gen 9 forms, PSS features like Wonder Trade, and eventual preparation for Kanto and Johto. On November 14, you will be able to patch a copy of Pokémon Emerald right on the official site or grab a .BPS file to patch locally. Between this, Pokémon Crystal Inheritance, and the rest of this year’s romhack scene, Game Boy-era Pokémon fans are eating well right now.
