Back in July, Retroid announced that it would be discontinuing the 8GB variant for both the Retroid Pocket 5 and Pocket Flip 2. These would be upgraded to feature 12GB of RAM instead, while only bumping up the price by $10. It would appear that the additional RAM wasn’t the only thing that Retroid upgraded with both of these handhelds.
Almost a week ago, a post surfaced on r/sbcgaming suggesting that someone’s Retroid Pocket 5 sported a 120Hz display. This was initially checked using the excellent PULSE app from Kei’s Retro Gaming, and then verified using some ADB commands. Fast forward to last night, and another post was shared on r/Retroid revealing that the Pocket Flip 2 also now features a 120Hz display.
There is a catch with this discovery, before you get your hopes up too much. Something in Retroid’s software is limiting the display from actually being used at 120Hz. So while you’re navigating through the Android interface, you won’t notice a difference if you’re coming from an earlier model.
However, as pointed out in the Reddit posts and in the RH Discord, you can use the PULSE app to enable 120Hz on a per-app basis. So while it’s not as seamless as just being enabled out of the box, at there is a way to do so, just with a little bit of extra legwork.
This comes after Retroid announced earlier this month that it would be discontinuing both the Pocket 5 and Pocket Flip 2, along with the Pocket Classic. Now, you can save $30 on either the the SD865 Pocket Flip 2 for $189 or the Pocket 5 for $179. If you want to take advantage, you’ll need to move quickly, as Retroid has already confirmed that once stock of these devices has depleted, they’ll no longer be available for purchase.
