Over the past week or so, we’ve been learning more and more information about the FPGB MINI from FunnyPlaying. As luck would have it, pre-orders opened overnight, priced at $69 for a limited time.
The problem here is that apparently FunnyPlaying only manufactured a total of TWENTY units that were available for pre-order. Needless to say, they sold out in a blink of an eye, making making for a rather disappointing morning after waking up and seeing that.
On the FunnyPlaying store page, the listing obviously now says “Sold Out,” but under the Color options, GB grey has a message saying “Wait for 20 days.” Presumably this is when the next batch of FPGB MINI handhelds will be released, but there’s no indication as to how many will actually be made available.
Ahead of the release, Game Boy Modder Makho held a livestream with the FPGB MINI. The two-hour long stream showed off the handheld in a variety of different ways, including the firmware options and even a teardown. Plus, Makho showed how the MINI looks compared to other options like the Tad Boy Color, FPGBC, Game Boy Color, and others.
Makho also tried a variety of different games and cartridges, including a few different flash carts like an Everdrive and the Nintendo Power Flash Cart. Unfortunately, it seems that these won’t be usable with the FPGB MINI, which is rather disappointing to see.
Hopefully, FunnyPlaying can release a firmware update in the future that enables this functionality. Especially since you can use flash carts with the likes of the Analogue Pocket and ModRetro Chromatic. Nevertheless, at least we know this now, as opposed to not being able to find out until after placing an order in the future.
