Despite the Playdate not currently being available for purchase, this unique handheld remains a community darling. However, if you’ve been distracted by other handhelds as of late, you might want to grab the Playdate from the shelf for just a few minutes.
Late last week, Panic sent out an email strongly urging everyone to download and install the latest Playdate OS:
Hello!!
We believe you may own one or more Playdate systems that are not updated to the latest Playdate OS.
We have an urgent request!
On October 15th 2026, the secure certificate used by older versions of Playdate OS will expire. After that date, your Playdate will no longer be able to connect to our servers.
Don’t worry. Updating your Playdate to the latest OS will fix it!
While this might not seem like a big deal, it’s more about avoiding potential annoyances if you miss the cutoff date for the update. According to the same email, you’ll still be able to update to the latest version of Playdate OS, however, “ou’ll need to take a number of steps to manually update your system to connect to our servers.”
Once the update is finished, your Playdate should be running version 3.1.2 of Playdate OS, so if you still see an older version number, just keep running the updates until you reach the most recent release. If you’re new to the ecosystem, installing the update is pretty straightforward. Just head into Settings > System > Settings > System > System Update.
In the meantime, Playdate’s Season 3 was just released, with the first two games (Gloom Gate and Soggy Froggy) being released on October 8. The next batch will arrive later this week, and there’s even a new game from Shaun Inman on the horizon for later in Season 3.
