Retroid is no stranger to clamshell devices. Their original Retroid Pocket Flip launched three years ago to mixed reviews. Some loved it for the design, others hated it for the sliders, and most skipped it for the hinge. The Retroid Pocket Flip 2 launched in 2025 to much more positive reception, and even fewer hinge issues than before, though not without its own set of concerns. And if you want to really count it, the Retroid Pocket Dual Screen arrived as a “clamshell” add-on that was basically our first answer to a pre-built dual screen add-on.
Well it seems that Retroid isn’t quite done with that yet, as this morning they just announced the next step in their clamshell dreams; the Retroid Pocket Duo.
Hot off the heels of of the announcement of the Anbernic RG DS Plus Retroid decided to scream “ME TOO” and drop the first announcement and video showcasing for the RP Duo with the faintest outline of a handheld while asking the question: “What if you had two?”
Because no they didn’t mean two handhelds; most of us have dozens. Rather they ask about the screens as that’s exactly what the new name implies. Thanks to the minimal on screen time of the handheld, we can start to gauge that it’s going to be a 16:9 display on top of, likely a 4:3 panel as 10 seconds into the video we get to see the two screens “on” with their background at two very different sizes. Maybe that mortgage screen is already making a reappearance.
With the AYN Thor already dominating the high end market for dual screen Android handhelds, we’ll have a number of questions to ask about the upcoming Duo. Is it another 8 Gen 2? How much is it going to cost? And most important to me; are the ergonomics going to be any good this time?
It’s great to see more options dropping in this segment of the market, we just have to hope the price is right. If Retroid can get this one out with ease, we might have some great compeition going for dual screen devices.
