MagicX has announced that it is “exploring a vertical handheld” called the “Pocket Dream.” This handheld is essentially designed to be a vertical version of the Mini Dream that was previously detailed, sharing many of the same specs.
According to the announcement on the MagicX Discord, the Pocket Dream “shares the same 3.3-inch custom OLED display and core configuration as Mini Dream, but comes in a vertical form factor — designed to offer a completely different handling experience from the horizontal Mini Dream.” Additionally, MagicX shared the following initial specs and renders:
- Size: 107 × 72 × 22 mm
- Display: 3.3-inch OLED (the same custom panel as Mini Dream)
- Same 4 SoC variants as Mini Dream (covering both Linux and Android)
Curiously, the Pocket Dream opts for a joystick-first approach when it comes to the controls. We’ve seen this a few times in the space, usually from some of the R36S clones, but it’s definitely not a common choice. One has to hope that the decision to go with a dual-joystick layout won’t result in a cramped retro gaming experience.
As is usually the case with MagicX handhelds, there’s a chance that the design could end up changing, depending on community feedback. There’s also the chance that the Pocket Dream never sees the light of day, as we’ve seen with countless previous “announcements” from MagicX.
On the bright side, it was confirmed that the “Mini Dream has officially entered its second phase.” Presumably that means that MagicX is inching closer to production for its next handheld, but we’ll have to wait for the next announcement to be sure.
The last update about the Mini Dream only revealed the dimensions, provided some new renders, and revealed that at least one of the four configurations will be powered by the Rockchip RK3566. Some further details would be nice to have before we get too excited.
