Joining the plethora of high quality retro porting projects this year is a recreation of Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow! Officially called Gen1Recomp and created by BryanThaBoi, it’s a recreation through the Lua engine that uses no copyrighted assets. More good news, it’s already compatible with Windows, Linux, MacOS, Android and even iOS (No building required). Just like most porting projects these days, only a ROM is required for extraction.
Gen 1 Recomp: How It Works
The project uses the open source LÖVE2D framework in the Lua engine and extracts ROM assets to build the title and then releases the ROM from the devices memory. Notably, it does not contain any copyrighted assets nor does it retain it upon recompilation. It is a safe bet this project is here to stay. Once the proper files are downloaded from their GitHub and the ROM is extracted, the game is preconfigured and ready to be played. More good news, we already have a number of enhancements and mod support.
Gen 1 Recomp: Awesome Mods
The most popular mod out of the gate, and heavily featured in promotional material is Dramatic Shape’s 3D Voxel Mod. This mod takes the pixel art of the GameBoy classic and renders it in a 3D, voxel style to give it a Minecraft or, dare I say, 3D Dot Game Heroes esque look. And a style not only carries into the overworld, but in battles as well giving it a super immersive and modern feel.
dual screen enjoyers will also be able to enjoy AverageConsumers Kanto Gear mod, which takes the original game and adapts it for dual screen use in the similar way to the DS and 3DS Pokémon games. So health, menus, battle commands, and maps will automatically be dedicated to the second screen and is touch compatible.

out of the gate, this is truly a definitive way to play the original 90s titles, but that’s not to say that the remakes FireRed and LeafGreen and the Let’s Go series is anything to scoff at.
