… And it’s the gaming equivalent of a corporate pizza party. Did you overpay for goods due to United States Tariffs? Well, Nintendo is back again in the news in their own special love language to take the edge off: A ‘Customer Appreciation Sale’. Boasting a whole 30% off select titles, you too can share in Nintendo’s corporate tariff refunds by… Buying digital eShop goods. This sale will take place September 12th through the 26th.
In my coverage of Nintendo suing the United States Government, I have these scenarios:
- “Scenario A: Nintendo loses the lawsuit, and we continue to pay higher prices to subsidize their import fees.
- Scenario B: Nintendo wins and gets refunded their import duties, and we continue to pay higher prices to subsidize their import fees.”
Well, here’s scenario C.
In the advent of Nintendo’s own attorneys claiming consumers “Got what they paid for” for more expensive physical goods, as well as Nintendo suing the United States Government and acquiring a substantial tariff refund (and effectively double dipping their profits), hosting a sale to compensate the consumers seems a little… tone deaf. Sales are always good, but (In my opinion) Nintendo would have been better off saying nothing instead of:
“The Customer Appreciation Sale is our way of saying thank you to Nintendo players for their continued support and is made possible in part by tariff-related refunds. While Nintendo absorbed most tariff-related costs, the refunds helped make promotions like this one possible.”
While we do not currently know the actual games that will be on sale, 30% is a very specific number the big N likes to use for their 1st party titles, so expect to buy Mario Kart 8 for $41.99 plus tax. Nintendo started off the week pretty well with an epic Zelda direct and a stacked Nintendo direct. This one feels a little off. What do you think?
