While the Anbernic RG Rotate has managed to capture my attention, slowly replacing the TrimUI Brick Hammer as my EDC handheld, GAMEMT is cooking up something arguably even more exciting. The E5 ModX first broke cover back in April, initially looking like just another addition to the GAMEMT E5 lineup.

However, that couldn’t be further from the truth, as we quickly learned that it’s actually a modular handheld. Not only can you remove the display from the controller, but we’re also expecting at least one module that transforms into a MagSafe controller for your phone.

Over the past week or so, more videos have been shared, some by the @Royibeila account on Twitter, in addition to the promo video below shared over on the RH Discord by @jdewitz.

The first video is just a few seconds long, giving us a look at what the shell of the E5 ModX looks like, with the controls and internals completely removed. Whoever is running the Royibeila Twitter account thinks “it will be available to everyone very soon.”

The most recent video from Royibeila is about a minute long, but it is actually of someone playing God of War via PPSSPP in a completely assembled unit. In the top right corner, we can see the FPS dance between 51 and 60FPS, giving us a solid idea of what to expect so far.

According to previous leaks, the E5 ModX is expected to be powered by the MediaTek P60, the first time we will see this chip in a retro handheld since the infamous TRDR Pocket. The P60 is expected to be joined by 3GB of RAM and at least 32GB of storage, with all of your games being played on a display with a 1024 x 768 resolution.

My hope is that with more videos being shared, and not just leaked, we’re actually getting closer to an official release. I also hope that any of the “first-party” controller mods for the GAMEMT E5 ModX are released at the same time, and not just randomly show up months down the line.

Share.
