Backbone has officially launched the Backbone Pro, a major step forward for mobile gaming hardware that finally brings Bluetooth connectivity to the company’s well-known controller lineup. This marks the first time Backbone has offered a controller that works without physically plugging your phone into it, offering players far more flexibility in how and where they game.

One of the Pro’s biggest draws is its ability to switch between handheld mode and wireless mode. Players can still dock their phone directly into the controller via USB-C, but with Bluetooth now included, users can also pair the Pro with phones in cases, tablets, PCs, TVs, and even VR headsets.

This makes it an ideal pick for gamers who want a single controller that works across multiple platforms.

Backbone Pro Upgrades

Backbone has also fine-tuned the controller’s ergonomics and internals. The Pro features full-size ALPS analog sticks, offering greater comfort and accuracy during long play sessions. Its rear triggers use Hall Effect sensors, ensuring smooth, reliable performance without the risk of long-term wear that plagues traditional components.

For added control, the Pro introduces two remappable back buttons (M1 and M2), giving players the option to program shortcuts or complex moves. The D-pad and face buttons have also been redesigned to use softer, quieter “carbon-pill” switches, which maintain responsiveness while lowering click noise — a small but thoughtful touch.

The App Gets Upgraded Too

On the software side, the Backbone app now allows for custom button mapping, trigger sensitivity adjustments, and personalized profiles for each game. With built-in support for cloud services like Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation Remote Play, and Steam Link, as well as compatibility with emulators, the Pro is tailored for both modern and retro gaming alike.
