It is Earth Day! A day where we celebrate Mother Earth and all of her glory. Maybe you have the day off and want to play some retro games to fit the spirit of the holiday. Well, we here at Retro Handhelds have you covered!
Captain Planet and the Planeteers (Genesis)
Captain Planet, he’s our hero! Going to take pollution down to zero! Is this game for the Genesis good? No, sadly it isn’t the best. Captain Planet was a fun TV show back in the 90’s though and maybe trying this game out today on Earth Day will make it just a little bit better. Join the Planeteers with their buddy, Captain Planet in their journey to save the world! Again though, it isn’t the best game out there.
SimAnt (SNES)
This game is exactly what it sounds like. It is a simulation game, but it is starring ants. You are in the backyard of a suburban family’s home and your goal is to take over the backyard and then chase them out of their home! You have to expand and build up your colony, while also taking on some pesky red ants while you are at it. Nothing says Earth Day like driving out a family of their home so ants can have a better place to stay.
Final Fantasy VII (PS1)
You are one of the most iconic Final Fantasy characters ever, Cloud Strife. Your goal is to use your awesome buster sword and help a group of Eco-Terrorists take down an evil megacorporation that is using up all of the Earth’s life essence as an energy source. I don’t want to spoil too much of this one if you haven’t played it, but if you haven’t played it, what are you waiting for? It is a great JRPG that also just had the second part of the remake released for the PS5 if you are into that.
Body Harvest (N64)
Aliens are here to destroy the human race for good. Apparently, they have been harvesting humans for over 100 years, but they are ready to finish the job this time. That is if Adam Drake doesn’t have anything to say about it. You play as the protagonist stopping the alien invasion of Earth and saving the last of the remaining humans. This game is surprising to have come out on the N64, but it is a welcome change of pace.
Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town (GBA)
Tired of all this action? How about a nice relaxing game where you are farming? Harvest Moon has a ton of great entries in the series, but I picked this title because it was one of my favorite entries. The story is similar as the other games. You inherit a farm that you must take care of while you build relationships with the townspeople. You can grow crops and upgrade your equipment as time goes on. Any farming game would be great for Earth Day, so pick your favorite one!
Happy Earth Day from us at Retro Handhelds. Get outside and enjoy your favorite retro handheld. Check out this article if you need to know how portable they are. Also, be sure to pick up a Miyoo Mini Plus or RG35XX+ as those make great portable companions.
