The wait is finally almost over. After first being teased all the way back in June, the Anbernic RG 55G1 is just about ready for prime time. Anbernic has confirmed that preorders will open on Monday, August 31 at 6 AM EDT/3 AM PDT.
After Anbernic provided confirmation of what chipset is powering its latest Android handheld, the last remaining question was the price. That question has now been answered, as the RG 55G1 will retail at $149.99 for the 4GB/64GB model, with the 8GB/128GB variant coming in at $174.99.

As is tradition with the release of new Anbernic handhelds, you’ll be able to save a few bucks during the first 72 hours after the listing goes live. This time around, we have a $10 discount to take advantage of, knocking down the prices to either $139.99 and $164.99, respectively.
Anbernic RG 55G1 Specs and Initial Impressions
Over the course of the past week, the RG 55G1 began arriving for various reviewers within the retro handhelds space. This includes Russ from Retro Game Corps, Stubbs, Rob the Retro Tech Dad, and Nick from the RH Website.
It seems that opinions vary on where the RG 55G1 stands, mainly because Anbernic managed to release a new handheld that looks very similar to a Switch Lite, despite not actually being capable of playing Switch games. For whatever reason, this kind of feels like the theme of the year to a certain extent for Anbernic. The RG Vita/RG Vita Pro struggled with PS Vita emulation, the RG DS struggled with DS emulation, and now the RG 55G1 struggles with Switch emulation.
Some also might gripe about the use of an IPS panel instead of AMOLED, but it actually looks like one of the better panels that Anbernic has used. Unfortunately, the refresh rate is capped at 60Hz, but hey, you win some, and you lose some.
Nevertheless, make sure you check out Nick’s first impressions of the RG 55G1, along with the dedicated livestream from Thursday.
