If you haven’t been keeping up, ModRetro recently just dropped their M64; an FPGA based N64 console that offers full fledged support, and promises reliability and consistent speed with original Nintendo 64 hardware. All of that despite the compatibility list and fixes they’re attempting to make for the console now that it’s out. That all being said; the team there is really taking things seriously as they’ve just recently put out a software update for the M64 directly as well as for their $90, elongated N64 controller. If you want more information about the updates, they strangely enough posted it directly to Twitter. But if you’d like to stay off that platform, and check out the updates; we’ve provided them below as well.
Controller Update: 0.12.0
- Wireless Rumble: Fully enabled Virtual Rumble Pak in this release (requires updating your console as well).
- Wired Rumble & Accessories: Improved Virtual Rumble Pak performance in wired mode, and accessory swapping settings now persist across power cycles.
- Joybus Reliability: Major stability and performance improvements.
- Wired Controller Fixes: Resolved random wake events and connection state issues.
- General Stability Upgrades: Additional underlying controller performance fixes.
Console Updates: 1.24.3
- Audio Improvements: Enhanced 48kHz audio output compatibility.
- Display Preference: Auto now shows the display’s preferred resolution. We’ve also added a way to select between 50 Hz and 60 Hz, if your display supports it.
- Fixes & UX: Fixed “Forget All Controllers” debonding, resolved network menu overlaps, updated wireless connection animations, and overall system stability fixes.
Upcoming Updates:
- First batch of open-source exports for M64
- Mechanical and electrical designs for M64 Console and Cartridge released 8/14/26
- Wireless rumble support for 8BitDo controllers
- UIpgraded video filters and saved advanced video settings
If you’re into FPGA and want N64 cartridge support, your options are really down to this and the Analogue 3D. Where you choose to go with your money is up to you, but it’s good to see updates for products people bought are coming out just as swiftly as they really should. Hopefully we’ll see more down the line.
