The Linux-first OrangePi Neo handheld just hit the pause button again, and this time the culprit isn’t design, firmware, or some shady crowdfunding drama; it’s boring component prices and the AI gold rush.

Manjaro lead Philip Müller updated the long-running Neo status thread to say the project is now “on ice” thanks to high DDR5 RAM and SSD prices. Certifications are actually done (CE and FCC are in the bag), and Manjaro Gaming Edition has seen a lot of work, but they’re now “waiting for a good time to launch the product.” In other words, the hardware is essentially ready; the bill of materials is not. Consider it an extended hiatus, and not the band breaking up.

That said, this thing has already burned through multiple target windows: originally Q1 2025, then Q3 2025, then “hopefully” H1 2026. All that for a device built around AMD’s 7840U or 8840U APUs, which sounded spicy when it was first teased but already feels dated in a market that won’t stop spitting out new silicon.

The bigger story is the AI boom carpet‑bombing anything that needs fast RAM and decent SSDs. Data centers are hoovering up production, leaving consumer devices, especially niche Linux projects from smaller outfits, to fight over what’s left at horrible price points. Even Valve’s Steam Deck OLED keeps dipping in and out of stock, and that’s with Valve money behind it.

The Manjaro team insists the Neo isn’t cancelled, just chilling until costs calm down. The problem is that every extra delay makes the original spec sheet harder to justify unless they either eat margin, raise prices, or redesign around newer parts. None of those options is friendly to a tiny Linux-first project that was already niche to begin with.

If the Neo does somehow claw its way out of deep freeze, would you still be interested in a 7840U/8840U Linux handheld at today’s likely prices, or has the moment passed?
