As part of the unrelenting community support for N64 decompilation projects and PC porting, Harbour Masters takes on the mantle of producing their own version of the Super Mario 64 port. Anyone familiar with the Ship of Harkinian, Spaghettikart, and Starship projects will know that HM ports are the most user-friendly and most supported post-release, so Super Mario 64 getting this treatment is a huge win for the community.
Mario 64: What is Ghostship?
Dubiously dubbed “Ghostship“, this project was unveiled and simultaneously released today after a brief warning over Discord and an announcement video on YouTube. New to Harbour Masters Ports? Here is why you should be excited:
- Very easy and accessible compilation process: install to gameplay in 5 minutes (Expect to provide your own ROM)
- Easily accessible interface
- 4K and +60fps
- Texture pack compatibility out of the gate
- Level select
- Integration of miscellaneous cheats and mods
While this release is currently for PC only, a Linux port is coming soon, and, while not confirmed, it will almost certainly be ported to Android through developer Waterdish.
This surprise from the Harbour Masters team comes on the heels of a few other N64-related announcements. At CES, GameSir (in partnership with Hyperkin) announced the X5 Alteron, a controller featuring swappable control modules, one of which includes the N64’s C-pad. More recently, Pixel Games SARL-S announced that its popular Donut Dodo game has been successfully ported to the N64, with a Dreamcast version on the way.
If you want to download Ghostship for yourself, head over to the GitHub Releases page and download the version that corresponds with the operating system you’re playing it on. From there, you’ll find the directions to get up and running on the main GitHub page.
