In July 2024, almost a year ago, Max Zhou (product manager for Anbernic) announced there would be no further devices using the H700 chipset. Today, Anbernic announced the RG35XX Pro, a device that could end up being the fifth H700 device released since that announcement.
Often, the retro handheld scene gets a little bit of warning that a new Anbernic device is dropping; however, in other cases, like this one, we are as surprised as anyone when the announcement video drops. Now we’ve seen the video, we’d discuss what we know, what we can reasonably assume, and what we have yet to find out, based on the information available.
Anbernic RG35XX Pro: What We Know
- Form factor: The Anbernic RG35XX Pro sits like the love child of the Anbernic RG40XXV and the BatleXP G350. It has a vertical orientation and 2 analogue sticks, in what could very well be an identical shell to that used in the G350..
- Screen Size: The device will have a 3.5-inch 480p screen, which is the identical configuration of the other 3.5-inch devices in Anbernic’s “XX” range.
- Color Options: 3 colorways will be available, at least initially: Black, White, and a transparent aqua blue, which is reminiscent of the new Retroid Flip 2
- Connectivity: The 35xxPro will have WiFi 5, Bluetooth 4.2 (allowing multiple content rollers to be connected), and HDMI out. This will allow it to be “console-ized” when connected to an external TV.
Anbernic RG35XX Pro: What We Might Know
- The SOC: Since 2024, all members of the Anbernic “XX” series have been running the same H700 processor. While the CPU has not yet been confirmed, the performance highlighted in the video is consistent with all other H700 devices, which we’re taking as a clear indication that this is another H700 device.
- The Controls: The joypad and face buttons look almost identical to those present in the BatleXP G350 (a device strongly rumored to be made by an Anbernic subsidiary). It is expected that it’s more than a resemblance, and that these are identical parts. This should be a good thing since these were positively received in G350 reviews
Anbernic RG35XX Pro: What We Don’t Know
- What is meant by “Pro”: The RG35XX Pro uses a naming convention not previously used by Anbernic, and at this time, it’s not clear what’s meant by the term. It could refer to the addition of analog sticks, but that would feel very underwhelming. Here at RH, our expectation is that this indicates that the RAM is being doubled from 1GB to 2GB (as was the case with the recently released RG34XXSP), which should significantly improve the number of PortMaster ports that the device can run.
- Price and Release Date: As always, Anbernic never includes pricing details or release dates with its initial release video. We will update you on the arrival when these are known.
As with all newly announced devices, we will be creating a discussion thread in the RH Discord for people to chat and keep updated. We will also do our best to keep this page updated when new information is announced.
