It’s been a little while since the last Anbernic device was released, but it seems that the wait for something new is almost over. After a leak gave us a look at a new Anbernic handheld, the company published a “First Look” video on its YouTube channel. This officially confirms that the Anbernic RG40XXV will be on the way sometime in the near future.
At first glance, the RG40XXV looks rather similar to the Ayaneo Pocket DMG, another vertical handheld that recently went live on IndieGogo. Before getting too ahead of ourselves, the video shows off this RG40XXV in three different colors — White, Transparent Black, and Indigo.
It also features a 4-inch IPS display, complete with a 640×480 resolution, and Anbernic says it offers “an ultra-narrow bezel.” All the traditional controls from other handhelds are onboard, but Anbernic seemingly drew inspiration from Ayaneo’s Pocket DMG with the single thumbstick placement in the bottom left.
Over the course of the video, a bunch of different games are shown off, including titles from ports like Grand Theft Auto III and TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge. However, the RG40XXV also looks to be more than capable enough to play PS1 and Dreamcast titles without much of a hitch.
Admittedly, the RG40XXV looks pretty darn great so far, as Anbernic is seemingly moving into the realm of handhelds with 4-inch screens. However, there are still a couple of questions looming over the device — what processor is being used, and how much does it cost? Previously, it was said that the RG40XX H would be the company’s last handheld to make use of the Allwinner H700 chip. However, we aren’t yet sure exactly what Anbernic will rely on for its next wave of retro handhelds.
While it’s easy to draw comparisons to the Ayaneo Pocket DMG, the reality is that the RG40XXV is more of a successor to the RG351V from a few years ago. If this is the case, hopefully, we’ll see Anbernic release a successor to the RG353V/RG353VS. But, only time will tell.
In the meantime, Anbernic has this whole “new device” release schedule down pretty well. This means that we should learn more about the Anbernic RG40XXV over the course of the next week, ahead of a potential release later this month.

I think they drew inspiration from their own handheld, the RG351V which predated this handheld and Ayaneo was a brand new company at that time.
I’d really like to see this next to the RG351V, is it almost as large as the 405V?
It would be nice to play gamecube games
