If you haven’t been keeping up recently, Anbernic’s RG Rotate has been a polarizing handheld for a number of reasons. The satisfying snap of the rotating hinge, the square screen and metal body, or just Anbernic’s own advertising of the RG Rotate being used as both a clock and an MP3 Player. The latter of which being more questionable due to the lack of a headphone jack. Regardless, Anbernic has just put out system update V1.44 for the RG Rotate and you can grab it now if you want to see the latest they have to offer.

If you prefer, you can download the system software from Anbernic’s firmware page here, however if you already have an RG Rotate, it’s a lot easier to go to settings, select update and update your device without going to their website. The three big changes for the latest update are provided here:

  • Added multiple styles of digital watch faces and custom watch faces to the lock screen.
  • Added a toggle switch to hide the status bar on the lock screen.
  • Fixed known bugs.

It’s not a large update list, but it at least tells you they’re keeping an eye out on things. Further customization for the clock faces will allow another level of personalization that this handheld seems to be capitalizing on. In particular I definitely appreciate the cat face they used in their demonstration. Which speaking off, they do showcase the process to add new watch faces which appears to be a simple process of.

  • Create a folder for your background
  • Properly name your background, and clock hands to
    • clock_background
    • clock_hour
    • clock_minute
    • clock_second
  • Refresh the app to showcase your custom clock face

Outside of that, Anbernic is just focusing on making general improvements to the RG Rotate which is always a nice thing to see happen. With the rapid pace that handhelds come out it’s easy to forget that these devices are getting plenty of updates after the fact. At least the decent ones are, rather than just being left on a single software version forever. That being said, if you’re interested in picking up an RG Rotate, be sure to check out the links provided. It certainly can be a great clock if you need it to be.
