After nearly a year of the Retroid Pocket Mini and 5 and two more successful handhelds later, Retroid is back and teasing new hardware to be shown off sooner than you think! A new graphic from Retroid shows that one week from today, or next Monday 10/27, we will know what they have been cooking. While expected since Retroid recently dropped the prices of nearly all of their handhelds, it’s great to see we are so back and the hype cycle can begin anew.
It It the RP6?
Well, duh. But the real question is…Where do we go from here? The Retroid Pocket 5 was almost universally praised with it’s great performance to price ratio in the Snapdragon 865 and 5.5″ OLED screen and instantly became what some people would accept as an “endgame handheld” and…I agree. It’s fantastic. Even the Mini on its V2 screen is one of the best retro devices you’ll pay over $180 for.
There’s a decent chance that one piece of the puzzle has already been solved. You might remember earlier this year that Retroid was part of a joint announcement with Qualcomm for its latest batch of gaming processors. The Pocket Classic was part of the announcement, but so was a “next generation device” that was said to be powered by the Snapdragon G2 Gen 2.
Since then, it’s been radio silence regarding that handheld, but it’s probably safe to assume that whatever Retroid has to show off next week, includes that same handheld. At the very least, it gives us a pretty good foundation, even if there have yet to be any other devices released with that chip. It also probably means that while AYN and AYANEO are selling their upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite handhelds for pretty darn cheap, it’s unlikely that Retroid will do the same.
In the mean time, all we have is a JPEG, so we can only speculate and wait
