The classic PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4-inspired themes from the PS5’s 30th anniversary update are now a permanent fixture on the PS5.
Sony’s newest PS5 update delivers a hefty dose of nostalgia for longtime PlayStation fans, reintroducing classic system themes inspired by previous console generations. These themes, which were originally released as part of PlayStation’s 30th anniversary celebration, were intended to be a limited-time feature, but after an overwhelmingly positive reception, Sony has decided to bring them back permanently.
The update adds a new “Appearance” section in the console’s settings, where users can switch between themes inspired by the original PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4. Each theme replicates visuals and sounds of its respective console, offering a nostalgic throwback for those who grew up with the brand. For many players, these familiar audio cues are more than just sound effects, but rather time machines that transport them straight back to childhood living rooms and dorm room game nights.
Beyond the visual refresh, Sony is also focusing on audio customization in this update. A new feature called “Audio Focus” has been introduced, aimed specifically at users who game with headphones. This tool allows players to isolate and enhance specific types of in-game audio, such as voices or environmental sounds. There are also four preset modes to choose from, as well as manual options for balancing the left and right audio channels.
Whether you’re chasing that classic PlayStation feel or dialing in your audio setup for peak immersion, this release has something to offer for just about everyone.
