At this point, it probably shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, but a week after surprising everyone with a video of the RG40XXV, Anbernic has shared everything there is to know. Which includes the continued reliance on the Allwinner H700 chip. This is despite previous claims that the RG40XX H would be the last to use this SoC.

Paired with the H700, Anbernic includes 1GB of LPDDR4 RAM, along with dual microSD card slots. With the RG40XXV, you are able to use up to a 512GB microSD card, which is plenty of space for all of your games. Just in case you need a refresher, or this is your first time with an H700 handheld, it’s capable of playing up to N64 and Dreamcast, with a bit of PSP sprinkled in.

  • Display: 4-inch IPS, 640 x 480
  • Processor: Allwinner H700
  • GPU: Dual-core G31 MP2
  • RAM: 1GB LPDDR
  • Storage: Dual microSD Card Slot / Supports up to 512GB
  • Battery: 3200mAh (6 hours estimated battery life)
  • Connectivity: 2.4GHz Wifi, Bluetooth 4.2
  • Extras: 5V/1.5A Charger / Supports C2C charging / RGB Joystick Lighting
  • Software: Linux / 64-bit
  • Colors: White / Transparent Black / Indigo Blue

While I have to admit that I’m a bit disappointed to see Anbernic backtrack and rely on the H700, it’s not the worst thing in the world. We already have an abundance of H700 retro handhelds on the market, meaning that we should be able to enjoy the likes of muOS and Knulli on day one.

The only other disappointing factor of the RG40XXV is the 3200mAh battery. This is quite a bit smaller than we anticipated, especially considering that it’s even smaller than the RG35XX Plus (3,300mAh). Even still, Anbernic claims the RG40XXV lasts for up to six hours on a single charge. While not awful, I’m hopeful that we’ll be able to stretch that a bit further with optimized custom firmware.

With the RG40XXV, Anbernic also shared the last two pieces of the puzzle — price, and availability. Starting on August 26 at 3 AM PST, you can pre-order this latest handheld. Retail pricing starts at $66.99, but for the first 72 hours, Anbernic is offering a pre-order discount, bringing the RG40XXV down to $59.99.
