As the leaks initially claimed, the screen remains mostly the same as the one found in the RG405M, but the internals place this device within the same family as the RG35XX devices. The overall design bears a heavy resemblance to the RG Cube, but with the non-1:1 screen ratio, a Linux-based OS, a slightly elongated design, and a weaker chipset, the usage for this device will run in stark contrast to that of the Cube.
Despite Anbernic handhelds forgoing their typical naming scheme where their devices featured chipsets that could be denoted by their generation, Anbernic seems to be trying their absolute hardest to fit the H700 into as many possible designs as possible with the XX suffix. Normally, the third number in Anbernic’s product titles would be the generation Anbernic has attached to the chipset. 0 was the JZ4770, 1 was RK3326, 2 was RK3399, and 3 was the RK3366.
The XX naming comes from the utilization of Allwinner’s H700 chip, but the H700 is noticeably less powerful than the RK3366. And for this reason alone, the naming scheme Anbernic relied on was thrown into disarray, and the ending point was to use XX to symbolize the weaker, but newer-to-Anbernic chipset.
To date, there is only one console Anbernic has released where the XX naming was used, but the H700 was absent — the oft-forgotten original RG35XX from early 2023. With the release of the updated RG35XX Plus, every XX-named device afterward features the Allwinner H700.
As for the cost, Anbernic is pricing the RG40XX H at $69.99 and it’s available from either AliExpress or directly from Anbernic.
