We were obviously a bit more focused on Azahar announcing it will no longer support Anbernic handhelds, so we forgot to share this latest RG DDS teaser. Early yesterday morning, a new video was released on Anbernic’s YouTube channel giving us a closer look at its upcoming clamshell handheld.
Apparently, this video is just “Part 1,” but is kicks off with a bang, showing the RG DDS playing Transformers: Devastation for the PlayStation 4 via Bachata S4.
It’s absolutely wild to not only see PS4 emulation included in a showcase, but that it’s also being done on a clamshell handheld from Anbernic. Just as impressive is that thanks to the revamped bottom screen, we can see that performance is quite stable with the FPS only fluctuating between 53 and 60 FPS.
This is where the controversy begins, as Anbernic then shows Nintendogs + Cats being played at 3x resolution via AzaharPlus. The purpose here was to not just show off performance, but to also give us a look at stylus and microphone support within games. 3DS emulation continues with Pokemon Omega Ruby for a few moments before the video pivots.
From there, Anbernic reveals that the RG DDS supports DisplayPort out via USB-C at 1080p, along with compatibility with AR glasses. Apparently with this functionality, when paired with AR glasses, the RG DDS also allows for “native stereoscopic 3D effects” which is pretty darn impressive.
We’re then shown 3DS wireless multiplayer capabilities with two people playing Super Smash Bros. for 3DS at 3x resolution via AzaharPlus. The video then wraps up with some Nintendo DS emulation via melonDS. Both Golden Sun: Dark Dawn and Contra: Dual Spirits are played at a 5x resolution, while also having the top-screen size correctly matched to the bottom, complete with the pillar boxing on either side.
Pre-orders are currently open for the Anbernic RG DDS, along with the early bird discounts. Pricing starts at $284.99 for the 8GB/128GB model, or $349.99 for the 12GB/256GB variant. According to Anbernic, it will begin shipping “gradually starting December 10, 2026.”
