Starting 13 days ago, AYANEO began teasing the successor to the Pocket Micro and Pocket Micro Classic with the Pocket Micro 2. In that span, the hype train was building steam, all leading up to today’s launch, complete with a dedicated livestream that lasted for almost four hours. At some point during or shortly after, pre-orders opened, and the Pocket Micro 2 almost immediately sold out.
We’ve seen this before, as these pre-orders have a tendency to come in waves, and not just from AYANEO. The company didn’t even opt for the Indiegogo route, instead listing all three colorways and configs on its own online storefront. Many didn’t think twice, as we expected pre-orders to open up once AYANEO could shore up materials and resources to have them manufactured.
As luck would have it, that’s not the case. According to AYANEO’s Discord, there were a total of 110 Pocket Micro 2s available for purchase. All of them were snapped up, and that’s all that will be sold. In a message from John Nee on the AYANEO Discord, when asked about when a restock would happen, they replied with “No restock, sorry about it. Pocket MICRO 2 is a real limited edition.”
It turns out that the reason why so few units were made available for the international market was because “sales surged dramatically and far exceeded” what AYANEO expected when it opened pre-orders in China. Here’s the full message provided by John Nee over on the AYANEO Discord:
I suspect AYANEO didn’t expect this kind of backlash at all for the Pocket Micro 2, and now it is trying to reverse course a bit. Those still interested in the Pocket Micro 2 might be in luck, as there is now a way for you to enter your email and subscribe to be notified if/when the handheld will again be available. Apparently, if AYANEO gets enough people subscribed to that email list to satisfy a potential MOQ (minimum order quantity), it will move forward with making more Pocket Micro 2s available for the global market.
