Clamshell handhelds are all the rage right now, and someone in the Steam Deck community has decided Valve’s hardware deserves a spot at the table. A Reddit user going by MadMario0_0, also known as Pixel Nerd, has built a fully functional clamshell conversion of the Steam Deck called the Flip Deck, and it looks exactly as good as that name suggests.

The build involved completely disassembling an actual Steam Deck and reimagining it in a folding form factor. Nearly everything made the transition: all the face buttons, the two back buttons, and the trackpads are present and accounted for. The one notable omission is the joysticks, though the builder found a workable solution for that. No word yet on what that solution looks like in practice, but a follow-up video posted to Reddit shows the Flip Deck in actual gameplay, and the button spacing appears to be less of a problem than it might look at first glance from photos.

The dimensional trade-offs are interesting. The Flip Deck comes in about 4mm taller than a standard Steam Deck, but sheds 100mm of length in the process, which is a meaningful reduction for something that was already a fairly large handheld. The slim profile of a closed clamshell form would make it considerably more pocketable than the Deck in its original configuration, though the absence of the Deck’s distinctive ergonomic handles is the obvious sacrifice.

The build quality visible in the posted images looks genuinely impressive for a community project, and the reaction in the original Reddit thread has been predictably enthusiastic. There’s no tutorial or printable shell files available yet, but given the response, it seems likely MadMario0_0 will eventually share the designs for anyone who wants to try replicating it.

With clamshell handhelds regularly making noise in the market, the timing of this particular project feels about right.
