If you’ve watched or listened to the Retro Handhelds podcast over the past year or so, every once in a while, you’ll hear me or Rob talk about how we wish Xbox emulation on Android were possible. As of just a few moments ago, our wishes have come true as X1 Box is officially available on the Google Play Store.
The project came together really rather quickly, and what felt like out of left field. It went from mere rumblings to a full Play Store release in the span of about two weeks or so, which is just wild to think about.
During that time, a few forks and leaked APKs from the testers group made their way through the community. But after messing around with one for about an hour, I decided just to hold off until the official version was released, whether it be via the Play Store or GitHub.
For as exciting as it is to have Xbox emulation on Android, there are some caveats to be aware of. The Play Store description provides two of the big requirements if you hope to have a decent experience:
X1 BOX is resource-heavy. A device with 8 GB RAM or more is recommended.
Lower-end devices may run poorly or fail to run games correctly. Vulkan support is required.
On top of that, there are a few more things you’ll need before you try emulating those classic Xbox games on Android. Here’s the list:
- MCPX Boot ROM Image
- Flash ROM Image (BIOS)
- Hard Disk Image
In what should come as little surprise, those three files can be acquired and/or extracted with your own original Xbox. From there, it’s not quite as simple as just tossing your ROMs into a dedicated folder. Instead of more traditional formats such as .iso or .ZIP, your Xbox ROMs will need to be in the .xiso.iso format.
There are a few different tools out there that make this conversion pretty easy. However, izzy2lost baked in an iso to xiso converter for everyone to take advantage of, removing one potential painpoint from the equation.
If you want to grab X1 Box for yourself, it’s available from the Play Store right now and is surprisingly priced at $7.99. We’re not exactly sure whether that’s going to lead to trouble down the line, as X1 Box is described as being “based on xemu.”
Nevertheless, if you just want to fire up Halo on your Odin 3, it’s your time to shine. And judging by the anticipation from some in the community, I know for sure I won’t be the only fan of this one.
