It’s a Christmas miracle! Gamma Claus decided to surprise everyone with the release of GammaOS Next for the Anbernic RG DS. This means that once Anbernic actually starts shipping its latest handheld, you can ditch the janky stock OS in favor of a much better and improved solution.

This build is based on version 1.1.0, which is the same version that was initially released for the RG405M, RG405V, and RG505 at the end of November. With it, Gamma managed to fix a lot of frustrations while using Android 14/LineageOS 21 as the base.

Some of the major improvements include the following:

  • Global Shader Pipeline: Unified system-wide shaders
  • Immersive Mode: A consistent console-style experience
  • GammaEQ: A new audio equalizer engine in AudioFlinger
  • Improved task switcher responsiveness and touch handling
  • Reduced rendering latency and animation jitter
  • Lower background CPU usage and improved thermal behavior
  • Faster system boot times
  • More reliable D-pad and analog input handling
  • Broad stability improvements across the frameworks and vendor stack

While that’s great and all, some specific issues only affect the RG DS, such as one of the screens automatically dropping to 40Hz in the middle of a game. That’s where GammaOS comes in, as it includes the following fixes and improvements:

  • Fixed 40Hz bug on top screen.
  • Fixed Drastic secondary screen latency (DualStack).
  • Added QOL enhancements (RA launching on second screen, true multitasking without system pausing apps).
  • Fixed sleep (Deep Sleep enabled by default).

As it currently stands, this build of GammaOS Next is only available for content creators and reviewers. However, we suspect Gamma will have a build ready for the public once Anbernic actually begins shipping the RG DS to those who pre-ordered the upcoming handheld.

We just got this installed on our RG DS, so stay tuned for more coverage as we dive in and start testing out different things.

Ummmm…..apparently there’s a different definition of “released” which I am unaware of. Please try to hold back hype until there’s something we no non-content creators can actually obtain.
