UPDATE (9/1): Snapdragon 8 Elite

There it is! AYN has officially confirmed that the Odin 3 will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite, making it the first confirmed handheld to make use of Qualcomm’s flagship processor. This also marks the first major processor change in almost two years, which is frankly a pretty big deal.

The above banner also confirmed some of the other Odin 3 specs, such as the weight (390g), dimensions, and that it will use an 8,000mAh battery. We suspect more information will be revealed sooner rather than later, but there’s no indication as to when the Odin 3 will actually be released.

UPDATE (8/31): Display Details

Well, well, well. Look what we have here. A couple of days after showing off the Odin 3 design for the first time, AYN is back at it again, confirming the first details about its upcoming handheld. There’s not much to dissect here, but now we know the Odin 3 will feature a 6-inch AMOLED display with a 1920×1080 (FHD) resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. This is the same size as what’s found on the original Odin 2, however, the difference here is that the display is being upgraded to a 120Hz AMOLED panel, as opposed to relying on a 60Hz IPS screen.

UPDATE (8/29): We Have a Promo Vid!

I’m really at a loss about AYN’s motivation here, besides the obvious of just picking a random day and time to reveal. Nevertheless, a little over two hours after sharing the first image of the Odin 3, AYN is back at it, dropping a promo video of its next handheld.

It’s a little bit longer than 30 seconds, and the Odin 3 is really starting to look like the Odin 2, Retroid Pocket 5, and Odin 2 Portal were all mushed together to create the Odin 3. This time, we get a look at the Odin 3 from every angle, confirming my thoughts about the Power/Volume button placement, and it would appear as though the embedded fingerprint scanner will make a return after being omitted from the Odin 2 Mini and Odin 2 Portal.

But more importantly, we get to see the grips. They do look a bit larger than the Odin 2, and are definitely (at least from the render) bigger than the Odin 2 Portal. There’s also a massive exhaust on the back, covering up the fan and what appears to be a massive heat sink.

With our luck, by the time I’m done writing this, AYN will have already shared the specs.

Just as some of us might have been getting ready to head to bed, the first AYN Odin 3 teaser poster dropped. This is the first time that AYN has made any mention to the Odin 3 since it was part of the AYN Thor introduction, and gives us our first look at the upcoming handheld.

Right off the bat, it looks like a flatter, chunkier, and larger version of the Retroid Pocket 5. Complete with almost all-glass front panel, with the round and matte cutouts for the ABXY and D-pad.

Besides that, the teaser image shows a few obvious inclusions, such as the USB-C charging port on the bottom. This is joined by a 3.5mm headphone jack and microSD card slot, both to the left, with nothing going on to the right of the charging port.

As for the other buttons and controls, the right side has a Menu button to the top left of the ABXY, with the RGB joystick below. And below that, we have another function button housed in the same cutout as the right speaker. On the left side, it’s basically the same, with the exception of the left RGB joystick being asymmetrical, as the D-pad is below it.

And if you look really closely, you can kind of see that the Odin 3 will have stacked shoulder buttons. But again, this doesn’t come as a surprise. I’d be willing to bet that the Power and Volume are placed closer to the right, and an exhaust vent smack dab in the middle.

The more I look at this picture, the more I’m reminded of either a Retroid Pocket 5, or if AYN took the Odin 2 Portal and just flattened it out. That’s not to say it’s a bad design choice, but I will be interested to see the rear grips, as the RP5 wasn’t the most comfortable handheld out there.

Rest assured, this is just the beginning, so we’ll be sure to keep you updated with more Odin 3 information as it’s made available.
