Exclusively on our Discord, LUNA, a XU Retro news representative, has shared that there are major changes coming to two of the upcoming handhelds.

XU Retro, a company closely associated with MagicX, has been slowly drip-feeding smaller handheld devices that fit into the budget range but still offer a plethora of choices and power options. Recently, they’ve released the XU30 V32, a direct competitor to the TrimUI Brick featuring the same screen, same chipset, and roughly the same footprint.

Big Changes for XU Retro

The company has previously announced a few of their upcoming devices but has now slightly changed the chipsets found inside. Similarly to MagicX, announcements for their handhelds are typically made via Discord. While MagicX has an official Discord where they sometimes share updates, a large majority of them are posted directly to the Retro Handhelds Discord directly.

XU40 H55 Render

First up, the XU40 H55 is switching away from the Allwinner A733 and will utilize the MediaTek Dimensity 7050. The company recently shared specs for the upcoming handheld, but now, with this single change:

XU Retro XU40 H55 Specs

Display: 5.5 Inch 1080P 60Hz Touchscreen
RAM: 4GB LPDDR4X
Storage: 128GB
Connectivity: Wi-Fi 5 & Bluetooth 5.1
OS: Android 15 with Google Play and Over-the-Air Updates
Battery: 5300mAh

The improvement of the D7050 over the Allwinner A733 is massive. The D7050 can emulate PS2 and GameCube games with slight tweaks and adjustments, while the A733 will simply struggle to do so. Outside of this, PSP and 3DS emulation should be possible with relative ease, again, whereas the A733 would struggle.

The next device is the XU35 H40 and H50, which will use the MediaTek Helio P65, a relatively weaker chip that mirrors the compatibility of the Allwinner A133P, topping out around N64. As far as we can tell, this is the first time we’ve heard of this handheld, and no other specs were shared, but the images shown for the H50 variant displays a wider screen (potentially 16:9) with dual analog sticks. The more squarish version, with a lower-end chipset, may end up being a more direct competitor to the MagicX Mini Zero 28.

XU Retro with New Specs

Following the naming scheme of other devices, the H40 and H50 of the above device should symbolize two different versions, a 4-inch and 5-inch variant. Based on the renders shared in the announcement of these changes, the H50 will be 16:9 while the H40 will be 4:3. The larger of the two could end up being 3:2 and the smaller could be 1:1, we simply do not have the details just yet.

XU Retro and MagicX have been steadily working together to release some niche handhelds over the past year. MagicX, with its Touch 40 complete with its single-screen dual-screen layout, and even the recent XU30 V32 with its budget-friendly aspirations, jointly continue to corner a small subset of the retro handheld market.
