NVIDIA announced via its own CES web blog that the popular GeForce Now streaming service will receive native app support on Valve’s Steam Deck later this year.
For those who might not be familiar, GeForce Now allows you to cloud stream games already in your Steam, Epic, etc libraries on the go, using a GeForce RTX powered data center on the back end doing the heavy lifting, rather than say your home PC. The service currently works on the Steam Deck, but users will have to connect via their browser in a workaround. Native support should be most welcomed from users.
The Steam Deck’s portability paired with GeForce NOW opens up new possibilities for high-fidelity gaming everywhere. The native GeForce NOW app will offer up to 4K resolution and 60 frames per second with high dynamic range on Valve’s innovative Steam Deck handheld when connected to a TV, streaming from GeForce RTX-powered gaming rigs in the cloud.
How much better the app will fair running natively on the Steam Deck remains to be seen, but NVIDIA is promising that users should “get ready for major updates”.
Last year, NVIDIA introduced a way for you to download and install GeForce Now on the Steam Deck. This worked by switching over to Desktop Mode, downloading an installation script, and then manually adding the app to Steam after the script was finished running. This was aptly labeled as a “beta,” but the upcoming app seems to remove all of the extra steps that the previous method required.
NVIDIA seems fully committed to supporting the GeForce Now service, confirming that new titles like Avowed and Doom: The Dark Ages will have day one launch support.
