A newly unveiled mod for the Anbernic RG35XXSP reimagines the just-released handheld in a form that longtime SP modding enthusiasts have enjoyed for years. This latest customization ditches the signature clamshell design in favor of a rigid, unibody design, giving the device a sleeker, sturdier profile.
Gone is the familiar flip-top style. In its place is a solid shell that turns the RG35XXSP into a fixed-form handheld, echoing the simplicity and toughness of most vertical retro handhelds like the Retroid Pocket Classic, RG40XXV, or PowKiddy V20. The design not only changes the look and feel of the device, but also removes the potential wear and tear that can come from repeatedly opening and closing the device.
Boxy Inspiration
This mod takes cues from the Boxy Pixel “Unhinged” mod for the Game Boy Advance SP. The Boxy Pixel mod is a popular upgrade in the modding community that swapped out the hinged casing for a seamless aluminum body. Similarly, this RG35XXSP modification reimagines the handheld with a compact, always-ready-to-play setup that appeals to both collectors and gamers who favor minimalist, durable builds.

The modded shell completely reconfigures the RG35XXSP’s footprint, making it feel more like a traditional handheld and less like a modern hybrid. It’s a nod to old-school gaming sensibilities, while delivering a refreshingly modern silhouette. This kind of transformation also opens the door to a more straightforward grip, particularly for those who prefer the consistent ergonomics of non-folding devices.
Unavailable, but Highly Desired
While no official wide release has been published yet, early glimpses — such as those shared on Instagram — are already generating buzz. The crisp design and clever engineering are attracting both modding enthusiasts and casual tinkerers alike.

As interest grows, this mod could signal a larger trend of rethinking what retro handhelds can look like. The RG35XXSP has been a fan favorite ever since its release, and will soon have a new form that merges style, function, and nostalgia in an unexpectedly modern way.
As the surge in clamshell handhelds continues, prompting several companies to unveil their own modern takes on the iconic form factor, the TANQ SP emerges as a bold departure from the trend. Inspired by the popular unhinged SP mod, it highlights a clear demand for premium, metal-bodied alternatives that strip away the hinge while preserving the retro appeal.
At this stage, all we have are a few renders and early concept images. However, with the growing accessibility of 3D printing and precision metal machining, the design shown could realistically evolve into a tangible product. Still, as with any project announced ahead of release, it’s wise to monitor its development closely before considering a purchase.

This is stupid. There literally exists an unhinged version of the 35xx.
I like the metal, but removing the hinge removes the point of this SP.
With the original SP, you could argue the desire for an unhinged vertical unit vs the horizontal . That doesn’t apply here. People bought the 35xxSP because of the clamshell.
Strange that this article mentions the just released RG35XXSP but didn’t this come out a year ago and not have an ideal screen for the GBA.
The 34xx is but better for gba.
I love metal handhelds though but feel a square screen verticals metal would be best
