Can you believe we’re already almost halfway through the year? That means it’s been five months since Lenovo released the Legion Go S with Windows, which debuted the month before at CES 2025. Fast forward to now, and Valve just released SteamOS 3.7.8, which introduces official support for a variety of AMD handhelds, including the Z2 Go-powered Legion Go S. As luck would have it, Zu took time out of his busy schedule to install SteamOS onto his Legion Go S and shares his thoughts.
It turns out that the Z2 Go and Windows aren’t exactly a match made in heaven, which is a conclusion many came to pretty quickly. However, this was the sole option we’ve had, as the SteamOS and Z1 Extreme Windows models only recently became available over at Best Buy. Although it appears that there are some inventory issues, as the Z1 Extreme Legion Go S with SteamOS is still listed as “Coming Soon.”
Apparently, at least according to Zu, Valve is here to save the day with SteamOS.
Without spoiling the entire video, Zu takes us through things like why you should install SteamOS and ditch Windows, how well performance fares, and more. There are a couple of surprises thrown in there, and I’ll spoil just one: the Legion Go S is not the handheld if you need a lot of battery life. Even with the switch to SteamOS, the battery will last longer than on Windows, but the 55.5Wh battery still falls flat, especially compared to the Steam Deck OLED and the ROG Ally X.
We’re pretty sure ASUS is going to announce the ROG Ally 2 any day now, while other handhelds like the Legion Go 2 and Zotac Zone 2 should arrive later this year. Both of those latter handhelds are powered by AMD’s Ryzen Z2 Extreme, and we expect the same from the Ally 2. The Z2 Extreme is likely to offer quite a substantial jump in performance over its predecessor, but that will likely come with some rather steep price tags.
