Retroid has released the specs for the upcoming Retroid Pocket Flip 2 on its official Discord.
Over the past few months, we have been tracking and following the launch of the Retroid Pocket Flip 2, and today, Retroid has finally dropped the official specs.
Of note, the console will have two different versions, one with the Snapdragon 865 that we see in the Retroid Pocket 5 and Mini, and another with the MediaTek Dimensity 1100 that we see in the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro.
The difference in CPU is relatively minor, but the Snapdragon 865 option will net slightly better performance overall — similar to how the 5 outperforms the 4 Pro. However, despite there being two different versions, the only difference seems to be the packed-in CPU. All other features and specs appear to be exactly the same otherwise.
Colors Too, Baby
Retroid in typical Retroid fashion is also dropping some unique colorways for the console. Options include black, ice blue, 16-bit US, and GC.
Ice blue is a stylized name for what appears to be a transparent blue, much like the watermelon option available for the original Flip. 16-bit US is very clearly inspired after the US release of the SNES and has two different shades of purple for its action buttons as opposed to the rainbow buttons used in UK and Japanese units. GC is themed after the classic purple GameCube, a newer colorway that has gained an immense following after the release of the RP5.
Retroid has yet to share more specifics, like pricing details, or when the device will be available for preorder, but they have shared that those should be available “soon.”
With a constant and steady fervor growing for the Flip 2, and the vast improvements it provides over the original Flip, Retroid is clearly focusing on maximizing the success the RP5 and Mini both saw a few short months ago.
What to Expect Next
The two consoles’ features and screen set them apart from a majority of other handhelds. The Mini houses a 4:3 aspect ratio with its 1280 x 960 resolution, while the RP5 sports a 16:9 aspect ratio with an industry-standard 1080p resolution. Their OLED screen and glass panel atop it are the main eye-catchers of the two handhelds, and the same can be said of the Flip 2’s screen as it is the same as the one found in the RP5. On top of that, with an assumed cheaper option utilizing the D1100, it would be the first time we see Retroid attach an OLED screen to a device with that specific chipset.
When the Flip 2 launches, it will be joining an incredibly small league of clamshell retro handhelds. We have seen the Miyoo Flip and RG35XX SP both draw inspiration from the GBA SP, but there are limited options when it comes to devices other than the extremely expensive AYANEO Flip DS, original Retroid Pocket Flip, and GPD handhelds that utilize a design that draws inspiration from the DS. The original Flip was admired for its power paired with its design back when it launched in 2023, but the Flip 2 is very clearly an upgrade to that device in every tangible way.
When Retroid shares more information about when gamers can preorder the Flip 2, Retro Handhelds will be the first to share that information with you all.
