It feels like there has been a resurgence in Retro Handhelds with 3:2 aspect ratio screens in the last few months. While other manufacturers have joined the part with more expensive offerings, like the Anbernic RG34XX and the AYANEO Pocket Micro / Pocket Classic, the start of the 3:2 renaissance can be tracked to Powkiddy releasing the V10 in July 2024, Now, in 2025, Powkiddy look to be releasing another 3:2 device with a significantly better screen.

Render of the upcoming RGB50

Today on the Retro Handhelds Discord, user James Dewitz — who has a history developing software for Powkiddy devices — announced the forthcoming arrival of the Powkiddy RBG50. James was only able to share certain characteristics of the upcoming devices, however, that hasn’t stopped the community from speculating further about the specs of the device.

What We Know About the Powkiddy RGB50

According to James, the device is confirmed to have the following specs:

  • A 4.5-inch screen with a 3:2 ratio
  • Both Linux and Android operating systems
  • Wi-Fi
  • A new CPU hasn’t been previously used in a Retro Handheld. The only detail we have is that it isn’t a Qualcomm CPU.
  • Emulation performance, which is capable of PSP emulation

We also have a number of potential colorways provided by James. However, he was quick to also point out that these are rendered images and may not represent the final device colors

What We Might Know

  • The Screen Resolution: We haven’t seen many 4.5-inch 3:2 screens in the scene, so it has been speculated that the RGB50 uses the same screen as the KRT-1. This means it would likely have a resolution of 1080p, which would be a huge deal
  • CPU Performance: Since James described the device as “like [a] plastic RG405M”, it is expected that the CPU will at least be as powerful as the Unisoc T618 used in the Retroid Pocker 3+ and the Anbernic RG 405M

We also have a picture of the motherboard shared by RH Discord user Kitsune, although not much has been able to be determined from this image. However, shortly after publishing, we were informed that this is actually a motherboard from the RGB30 that is being repurposed for the RGB50.

All upcoming devices get a thread on the RH Discord in order for community members to discuss the device. The RGB50 is no different, and the thread can be found here until the device is officially released
