Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, CrazyGroupTrio‘s new game Mawthorne 2 is now available for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The devs have released the game as a ROM, allowing players to play the game on original hardware (using a flash cart), or on their favorite retro handheld.
A sequel to the original Mawthorne, this new Metroidvania follows the titular protagonist as he travels to a nearby moon to explore its treacherous depths, recover pieces from destroyed space station Epsilon 3, and enhance Mawthorne’s powers and abilities. While it continues the story of the original, the developers say that playing the first game is not required to enjoy Mawthorne 2.
The game features a large open world filled with monsters, secrets, and shortcuts. Players can unlock six new forms, each with different stats and abilities. It also has modern concessions you don’t see on your typical 8-bit game, like difficulty settings, and DPCM samples for higher sound quality. Additionally, Mawthorne 2 offers support for five languages: English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, and Japanese.
The digital NES ROM for Mawthorne 2 is available now on CrazyGroupTrio’s itch.io page for a minimum price of $10.00. Along with the ROM, you’ll also get a guide for the game in the form of a “PDF Manual,” which is just a nice touch. For the uninitiated, they have a bunch of other great games too, like the excellent Tryptic.
With its modern features and classic vibe, Mawthorne 2 is another feather in the cap for CrazyGroupTrio’s impressive catalog. It’s always cool to see ambitious new projects continue to breathe life into these beloved old systems.
