This article has been updated to reflect the pre-order availability of the GKD Pixel 2. The original article can be found below.

A few days after we caught wind that the GKD Pixel 2 might soon be released, it’s finally available for pre-order. At the time of this writing, it’s only available at KeepRetro, but hopefully, it will arrive at other retailers in the near future.

GKD Pixel 2 - Whats in the Box

Now that the pre-order page is live, we now know all of the key details, such as processor, screen resolution, and more. Here’s how the specs shape up:

  • Display: 2.4-inch IPS
  • Resolution: 640 x 480
  • Processor: Rockchip RK3326S
  • RAM: Unknown
  • Storage: microSD Card Slot
  • Battery: 1800mAh
  • Charging: 5V/2A via USB-C
  • Extras: Standby Mode / Vibration / OTG
  • Buttons: ABXY / Start + Select / D-pad / Volume / Power / L1 + R1 / L2 + R2 / Menu
  • Colors: Grey / Purple / Red / Green
  • Dimensions: 81 x 63 x 17mm

As we can see, the actual display size is identical to that of the original GKD Pixel. However, the screen on the GKD Pixel 2 is still a massive upgrade thanks to the 640×480 resolution, up from the original Pixel’s 320×240 display.

The KeepRetro listing claims that the Pixel 2 is using the RK3326S, but we wouldn’t be surprised if this was really just an RK3326. Even still, that offers a huge performance boost over the Ingenic X1830 from the original. And while there’s no specific mention, we suspect the Pixel 2 ships with 1GB of RAM.

Another upgrade provided by the GKD Pixel 2 is in the battery. This time around, we have a 1,800mAh battery, up from the original Pixel’s 1,300mAh cell. And when it comes time to juice it back up, you can do so using the 5V/2A USB-C port on the bottom.

GKD Pixel 2 - All Colors - 2

Pre-orders for the GKD Pixel 2 are now open over at KeepRetro, and the listing claims it will ship “around the end of February.” Pricing starts at $79.99, and there are four different colors to choose from.

Pre-order the GKD Pixel 2

In the world of truly tiny handhelds, the only two good options have been the Miyoo Mini and the GKD Pixel. From the looks of it, the GKD Pixel 2 is set to drop at pretty much any time now, which should make some people pretty excited.

We first caught wind of the GKD Pixel 2 almost two weeks ago, after a thread popped up in the Retro Handhelds Discord. At the time, the only information provided was a comparison between two screens, with no other commentary.

GKD Pixel 2 in Black and Red - Teaser

Since then, some details have been trickling in. So far, we know that the GKD Pixel 2 will be a little bit larger than the original Pixel. However, we still aren’t sure of what the screen size or resolution will actually be. All we do know is that the screen will be “slightly better” on the Pixel 2, but we aren’t sure if that means we’re getting OLED or if it’s just a resolution bump.

As for processing power, it’s unfortunately more of the same, as we just don’t know much besides that the Pixel 2 will be more performant. One indication of this is the initial screen comparison, which showed off Stardew Valley on the new model.

Besides that, the GKD Pixel 2 seemingly retains much of what made the original so exciting. It’s a tiny retro handheld that is more than capable of being played with one hand, with a shell made from aluminum. According to pictures shared in the RH Discord, the GKD Pixel 2 will come in Purple, Grey, Red, and Green. I would be lying if I didn’t say that I’m hoping to see the return of the “Rare Edition” with its Joker-like color combination.

The last big question is just how much the GKD Pixel 2 is going to cost, and we’re still in the world of the unknown. We’re hopeful that it will be priced around the same $70 to $80 mark as the original, but that will likely be determined by the screen and what processor it’s running.

As soon as more information is made available, we’ll be sure to update this post with the official details.
