I love demakes. I think they are so cool and really give new life to a modern game that you may have played a dozen times. The idea is that a game is recreated with lower graphics on a system it didn’t come out on. I did a similar list last year and wanted to share five more that I enjoy.

Bloodborne

Have you ever played Bloodborne and thought, “Hmmm, I wonder what this game would be like on the original PlayStation?”. Yeah, me neither, but this demake does exactly that! The game isn’t just de-made with graphics but also with controls as well.

Unfortunately, Sony took a page out of Nintendo’s book and just issued a DMCA takedown of this fan project. Maybe this is a hint that something is coming. If you can still find a copy, it is a great time and I strongly recommend it.

Halo: Combat Devolved

My last list had an Atari Halo demake, but this one is different! This is Halo for the Game Boy Color. It is still a work in progress, but what they have finished is very fun so far! The game is in 3rd person and has you playing through the original Halo game.

Final Fantasy VII NES Demake Gameplay

Final Fantasy 7 and all the remakes are very well-known and highly regarded games, but this demake? More people need to know about it. This is the whole game, but remade to be playable on NES. The original demake is very difficult and grindy, but there is a romhack of the demake called Advent Children that makes it more manageable.

Low Mem Sky

I am not the PICO-8 aficionado that Ban is, but this game is really cool! It takes No Man’s Sky and turns it into a PICO-8 game. How impressive and cool is that!? With all of the great 1×1 handhelds like the RG Cube, this could be a great game to play.

Animal Crossing

This demake uses GB Studio to recreate the hit life simulation game from Nintendo. This game is not complete, and I am unsure if there are plans to finish it, but it is really impressive the work they have done! So it is time to get that fishing pole and bug net and pay off your debt, but on your Game Boy this time!
